Happy New Year!

February 15, 2010

Marrying into an Asian family, I’ve had the joy of learning all kinds of customs that are new to me. This weekend was one of those learning experiences with the Lunar New Year.

Happy New Year!

We went to Houston’s China Town, or Westchase District on Sunday and had fun watching a Dragon Dance in front of an Asian food market. It was the first time Munchkin had seen anything like it. She was all dressed up in her red Chinese ‘pajamas’, and she loved the drums, the dancers and the sparkling dragon costumes. She learned what a Red Envelope is and that we have to feed the dragons. The only downside was when she freaked out, thinking the dragon I was “feeding” was going to eat my hand.

These kids were great. We left feeling like we were truly blessed with the good fortune that the dragons bring. Then we went for a bubble tea!

That sounds like fun. I have been meaning to get over there for some grocery shopping at some of those enormous Asian markets. I just need to make a point of doing it one of these Saturdays (when the traffic on I-10 is not so awful).

No kidding about the traffic! Our favorite market is Hong Kong- it’s huge. But it’s super busy, too. The next best bet is Viet Hoa.
