Paper Towels from Recycled Paper

June 30, 2008

Seventh Generation makes rolls of paper towels from recycled paper. These are the stats they print on their packaging:

“If every household in the U.S. replaced just one roll of 120 ct. virgin fiber paper towels with 100% recycled ones, we could save:

1. 933,000 trees

2. 2.4 million cubic feet of landfill space, equal to 3,700 full garbage trucks

3. 350 million gallons of water, a year’s supply for 2,700 families of four

4. Avoid 59,600 tons of emissions”

This all sounds good to me, however, these eco-friendly paper towels are wrapped in plastic. Wouldn’t it be nice if they considered using corn polymer instead of conventional plastic wrap? I would pay the extra few cents or a buck (what ever the price increase would be) to know that I would have zero landfill waste from my KP duty. The towels themselves can go in the compost, and the inner cardboard tube is recycled, so I’m just saying…
