The Four Main Ingredients

June 25, 2008

Forget the multi-purpose cleaners. All you really need around the house are:

1. Distilled white vinegar

2. Borax

3. Baking soda

4. Lemon juice

And assuming you already have some elbow grease lying around, you might need some of that, too. Distilled white vinegar is a natural disinfectant. It’s great- use it everywhere! Borax and baking soda are naturally occurring, and work well as scouring agents, without being too abrasive. Lemon juice has natural citric acids that help remove all kinds of grime, and it smells wonderful. I personally would rather smell lemon juice than some sort of ‘mountain snow fresh’ – it gives me headaches! One of my favorite TV shows is ‘How Clean is Your House?’ on BBC. They give great cleaning advice, often using just these four ingredients.

There are tons of other websites that give tips on cleaning your house naturally. has a section on how to mix these ingredients.
